2017 Actuarial Science Outstanding Alumnus: Jason Gomberg

Jason Gomberg

Mr. Gomberg is an actuary with the Chicago office of Milliman. His career as a healthcare actuary started in 1995. 

Jason has over 20 years of experience in managed care, prescription drugs, and provider payment systems. He focuses on projects related to the pharmaceutical distribution chain in the commercial, Medicare and Medicaid markets.

Prior to joining Milliman, Jason worked for a major commercial health insurance company, managing areas responsible for provider reimbursement, trend forecasting, and predictive modeling used for both rating and targeted disease management purposes. He also worked for a pharmacy benefit manager, consulting to large employers and health plans on issues related to prescription drug coverage including trend forecasting, benefit design and optimization, and marketplace trends.

As a consultant, Jason has worked with large employers on benefit design, flexible benefits pricing, and vendor selection for medical, drug, disease management, disability, and group life products. He also works with clients throughout the pharmacy distribution chain, including pharmaceutical manufacturers, pharmacy management companies, and Medicare Part D carriers.

Jason speaks regularly at healthcare and pharmaceutical conferences on various healthcare subjects.

2017 Statistics Outstanding Alumnus: L. Mark Berliner

Mark Berliner

L. Mark Berliner is Professor Emeritus of Statistics at The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio.  He received a B.S. in Mathematics and a M.S. in Statistics from Purdue  University. In 1980 he received a Ph.D. in Statistics from Purdue University and joined the faculty at Ohio State. He was Visiting Assistant Professor of Statistics at the University of Michigan in 1984. He was appointed Associate Professor in 1986 and Professor of Statistics at Ohio State in 1994. He was the Geophysical Statistics Project Leader at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, Boulder, Colorado, in1995-97. He was Director of the Program in Spatial Statistics and Environmental Statistics at Ohio State in 2012-14 and was Chair of the Department of Statistics 2011-15, concluding with his retirement in June of 2015.

He was a Consultant, U.S. EPA Science Advisory Board, 2002-03 and was a Contributing Author and Reviewer, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (various dates). He served as a founding co-Chair of the American Statistical Association’s Advisory Committee on Climate Change Policy and was Vice-Chair of the Activity Group on Uncertainty Quantification of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, 2012-14. He was elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2004), the American Statistical Association (1997), the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (2001), and was a recipient of the Distinguished Achievement Medal from the Section on Statistics and the Environment, American Statistical Association (2001).
